23 Reasons Visitors Should Stay Away From America

It’s only fair to warn travelers who are debating whether to visit. Consider this a public service announcement.

1. Fall can be an especially bad time

In some places, this devastation happens every year. It’s hard to see the appeal of dying leaves.

2. Nature can be frankly excessive

Niagara Falls

Sometimes uncomfortably loud and very wet. Where’s the pleasure in that?

3. In fact, the sunsets are scary

Visitors run away in horror. Why would anyone want to subject themselves to this?

4. Many of the beaches are overrated

Nothing to do but doomscroll for hours.

5. Driving anywhere is a huge effort

Visitors should be aware that reaching any destination may take considerably longer than expected.

6. Property size may be disappointing

They might get the wrong impression of what it’s like to live in the U.S.

If you are unlucky enough to live in a spacious American home, you might want to consider a Choice Home Warranty to help cover the repair or replacement of major appliances and home systems if they break down.

7. Restaurants tend to overfeed diners

Sometimes there’s so much that they may be expected to take food home in a box. Awkward.

8. There are fireworks in the summer

What an unnecessary spectacle. Why would anyone do that?

9. The risk of vertigo is real

Perhaps it would be better to avoid some destinations.

10. It’s too easy to overdose on caffeine

What made the U.S. think that free refills are a good idea?

11. Wildlife is allowed to roam freely

Imagine meeting that when taking a peaceful drive?

12. Supermarkets are ridiculous

There is just far too much to choose from.

13. It’s possible to get lost while shopping

Do malls really need to be eight floors high?

Of course, Americans can slash costs on dining, travel, eyeglasses, prescriptions and more with AARP — Just $15/year with auto-renewal. Join now.

14. Strangers will talk to you uninvited

Almost everyone wants to be your friend.

15. And servers are suspiciously nice

Is it possible that they just want to provide good service? Surely there is some ulterior motive.

16. Hotels may be too cool

Gergely Zsolnai / Shutterstock.com

The U.S. is obsessed with air conditioning. We would not want visitors feeling cold.

17. There’s nothing unusual to see

visionteller / Shutterstock.com

Boring museums, monuments and national parks everywhere.

18. Eating on the street is considered normal

Is it a good idea for delicious food to be so easily available?

19. Train rides can take days

Why would anyone choose to spend three days traveling from New York to San Francisco by rail?

20. Cities are overcrowded

Some describe them as vibrant, but why should visitors risk it?

21. Photo opportunities are rare

Which is just as well as visitor smartphones may not have enough memory for lots of pics.

22. Vehicles are gas-guzzlers

USA TODAY Network / Reuters

True. But gas costs are still so much cheaper than in Europe, and it’s so nice to have space. Don’t tell them!

23. No one will believe their U.S. travel stories

Their experience will be so awful that their friends won’t believe it. Hopefully, they will share this to stop anyone else from making the same mistake.

Not worth the trouble

With views like these, strange food habits, pushy strangers and far too few places worth photographing, the U.S. clearly isn’t worth the trouble.

Travelers everywhere should probably save themselves the disappointment and go somewhere else instead.

Research suggests adults who find it easier to bond with animals than with people aren’t antisocial — they’re drawn to a form of connection where the terms are visible, the loyalty isn’t conditional, and the relationship doesn’t require them to monitor a constantly shifting set of expectations that human attachment taught them to treat as a second job
