SSP|Loss Per Share $12.68 vs -$0.40 est (-3070.0%)|Rev $490.4M|Net Loss $1.15B

Stock $2.95 (+2.8%)

Dramatic Miss. The E.W. Scripps Company (NASDAQ: SSP) reported a Q2 2026 loss of $12.68 per share, dramatically wider than the -$0.40 estimate, marking one of the most severe misses in recent broadcasting industry history. The company generated $490.4M in revenue for the quarter and posted a net loss of $1.15B, reflecting significant operational challenges that have pressured the television broadcasting landscape. Shares traded up 2.8% to $2.95 following the release, a counterintuitive move that likely reflects either low expectations heading into the print or technical factors rather than fundamental optimism.

Deteriorating Fundamentals. Year-over-year comparisons paint a troubling picture, with the per-share loss widening to $12.68 from $0.59 in Q2 2025. Revenue declined 9.2% from $540.1M in the prior-year period, indicating sustained pressure on the company’s core broadcasting business. The magnitude of the net loss at $1.15B suggests either substantial write-downs, restructuring charges, or fundamental business deterioration beyond ordinary operating challenges. Without clarity on the composition of this loss, investors face uncertainty about whether this represents a one-time event or signals deeper structural issues within the television broadcasting model.

Segment Weakness. Local Media, the company’s top segment, generated $316.5M in revenue but declined 5.4% year-over-year, demonstrating persistent headwinds in traditional television advertising markets. Local Media core advertising revenue came in at $125 for the quarter, though this figure appears incongruous with typical segment-level metrics and may reflect a specific subcategory or measurement period. The company operated 60 total television stations at quarter-end, maintaining its multi-market footprint despite the challenging operating environment.

Subdued Outlook. Management provided 2026 full-year local political revenue guidance in the range of  $225.0M to $250.0M, This guidance range suggests the company anticipates continued pressure on revenue generation, potentially tied to political advertising cyclicality, secular shifts in viewership patterns, or competitive dynamics from digital platforms.

Mixed Street View. Wall Street consensus stands at 4 buy, 3 hold, 1 sell, indicating the analyst community remains divided on the stock’s prospects despite the challenging results. The modest positive stock reaction following such a severe miss suggests the market may have already priced in considerable distress, though the valuation at $2.95 per share raises questions about capital structure sustainability given the loss trajectory.

What to Watch: The composition of the $1.15B net loss will be critical—whether driven by asset impairments, goodwill write-downs, or operational losses will determine if this represents a reset or ongoing cash burn.
