New York City startups raised $8.88 billion across 233 deals in Q2 2026 — a 46% year-over-year surge in capital and the strongest second quarter in the city’s venture history. June alone produced the largest single funding month AlleyWatch has ever recorded. Behind the headline: 24 mega-rounds, the arrival of frontier AI research labs as a New York phenomenon, and a market that is compounding at a pace not seen since 2021.

A Record Quarter Built on Unusual Depth

New York City’s venture ecosystem delivered its strongest second quarter on record in Q2 2026, with $8.88 billion raised across 233 rounds in April, May, and June. The 46% year-over-year increase in capital on just 2% more deals tells the essential story of this quarter: this was not a broad-based surge in activity but a market in which round sizes expanded dramatically at the top while volume at seed and early stage remained steady.

Twenty-four NYC startups raised $100 million or more — a concentration of mega-rounds that captured 63% of all capital while representing just 10% of deals. The top 10 companies alone absorbed 43% of all Q2 funding. For founders outside that cohort, Q2 2026 was a healthy but not exceptional market. For late-stage companies with proven AI-era revenue models and institutional distribution, it was historic.

Globally, the context reinforces New York’s moment. Crunchbase data shows global startup funding reached its highest quarterly level since the 2021 peak, with AI-related companies attracting the majority of the ten largest rounds worldwide. J.P. Morgan’s Q2 2026 Venture Capital Monitor notes that AI-related investments now account for the largest share of VC dollars deployed in any single technology category in the fund’s history of tracking the sector. New York is not building frontier AI models at the scale of San Francisco — but it is building the application layer, the infrastructure tooling, and increasingly, the foundational research labs that surround that model development.

Month by Month: How Q2 Unfolded

The quarter built momentum across all three months, with June delivering not just a quarterly record but the single largest monthly funding total in AlleyWatch’s NYC dataset.

April 2026

$1.9B

73 rounds

A steady open. Capital growth of 27.7% year-over-year on largely stable deal volume — a sign of expanding round sizes rather than a broader surge. VAST Data led with a $500M Series F for its AI data infrastructure platform, underscoring the institutional appetite for AI infrastructure companies with proven scale. Healthcare and fintech showed steady appetite outside the AI headline, with Chapter’s $100M Medicare advisory round and Kashable’s $60M employer-sponsored lending round among the notable mid-market transactions.

May 2026

$2.3B

80 rounds · highest deal count of Q2

Seven rounds of $100M or more — a concentration rarely seen outside months anchored by a single outsized raise. Modal Labs led with $355M for AI cloud infrastructure, but the month’s defining character was breadth: four of the top 10 deals went to health and insurance technology companies. Vi Labs, Reserv, Garner Health, and Nourish collectively raised $471M, marking a quiet but significant reorientation of NYC late-stage capital toward health-sector AI applications.

June 2026 · Best Month on Record

$4.7B

81 rounds · 12 rounds at $100M+

The best funding month in AlleyWatch’s NYC dataset, full stop. NYC captured 24.4% of all US venture dollars — its highest national share on record. Ramp’s $750M Series F led at a $44B valuation. Two frontier AI research labs, Flourish and General Intuition, closed mega-rounds in the same month, planting foundational model development firmly in New York for the first time. Twelve companies raised $100M or more.

NYC in Global Context

New York’s Q2 2026 performance sits inside a global venture recovery that is simultaneously broad and deeply concentrated. Crunchbase reports that global startup funding in Q2 2026 reached its highest level since the 2021 peak, with AI companies capturing the majority of the ten largest rounds worldwide. The US market structurally benefited from geopolitical capital repatriation — European and Asian LPs diversifying into US funds — and the relative depth of the US LP base compounding that tailwind.

For New York specifically, the national context is revealing. June’s 24.4% share of all US venture dollars — on a month when the national market totaled $19.27 billion — is not a statistical anomaly. It reflects the genuine depth of the city’s late-stage pipeline and the outsized scale of the rounds it attracted. NYC’s average deal size of $58.1M in June ran 29% above the national average, and its $15.0M median was nearly double the US figure.

The Month New York Became a Frontier Lab City

No analysis of Q2 2026 is complete without confronting what happened in June. New York is not building frontier AI models — that has remained concentrated in San Francisco. Until now. Two pure research labs closed mega-rounds in the same month: Flourish emerged from stealth with $500 million, backed by Jeff Bezos, Lux Capital, and GV, to build brain-inspired AI architectures from a ten-story West SoHo facility complete with a wet neuroscience lab and in-house data center. General Intuition announced $320 million from Khosla Ventures and General Catalyst to train world models on billions of gameplay clips — betting that human decision-making in games is the richest available dataset for teaching AI to act in physical environments.

Both companies are pre-product research organizations valued in the billions — a profile that until Q2 2026 belonged almost exclusively to the Bay Area. Two such rounds in a single New York month signals something structural: the city’s AI story is expanding beyond applied AI and enterprise software into foundational model development itself.

The applied AI theme ran deep across the rest of the quarter. AlphaSense raised $350M at a $7.5B valuation after crossing $600M in annual recurring revenue. Cyera added $300M for AI-native data security. Standard Bots raised $200M for AI-driven industrial robotics. Modal Labs raised $355M for AI cloud compute infrastructure. Across Q2, AI companies captured 51% of all capital deployed — $4.56 billion across 81 companies — while Enterprise-category companies raised another $4.13B across 84 deals, with significant overlap between the two as AI-native enterprise software dominated the mid-market.

Stage-by-Stage: Where the Money Went

The stage data confirms the bifurcation that defined the quarter at every level. Late-stage deals — just 18% of transactions — captured 69% of all capital at a $100M median. The gap between late-stage and everything else is Q2 2026’s defining structural feature: a market that is simultaneously healthy in deal volume and radically concentrated in dollars at the top.

Series A held steady at 82 deals and a $12.3M median — consistent with healthy ecosystem formation and a well-functioning pipeline of AI infrastructure and enterprise companies moving from seed toward commercialization. Series B was quieter than expected given the Series A volume of recent years: 29 deals at a $21.6M median suggests either a pipeline air pocket or companies leapfrogging directly to larger growth rounds, bypassing the traditional Series B stage entirely. Early-stage activity was the ecosystem’s foundation, accounting for 35% of all transactions at a $3M median.

Exit Market: The Window Reopens

Capital into the ecosystem is only half the story. The other half is what’s happening on the exit side — and Q2 2026 brought some of the most encouraging signals since 2021. Crunchbase reports that global startup exit value in Q2 2026 reached its highest level in five years, driven by a combination of high-value M&A activity and a meaningful reopening of the IPO window.

J.P. Morgan’s Q2 2026 Venture Capital Monitor notes that the performance of recent technology IPOs has been strong enough to build sustained pipeline confidence, with green shoots visible across semiconductors, space, quantum computing, consumer internet, and robotics — all sectors with New York representation. The M&A channel was also active in NYC specifically, with two notable exits closing in the quarter.

J.P. Morgan’s monitor frames the IPO opportunity starkly: if IPO volumes as a percentage of US equity market cap were to reach 2021 levels, the market would be on track to absorb over $200 billion in issuance. For NYC-headquartered companies — in fintech, enterprise AI, healthcare, and real estate technology — that have reached the scale and revenue profile that historically precedes public-market debuts, the reopened window creates urgency to move in H2 2026.

Macro Headwinds: What Could Slow the Momentum

The bull case for NYC venture in H2 2026 is strong, but not without risks. J.P. Morgan’s Q2 2026 monitor flags several headwinds that founders and investors should monitor carefully as the market enters its historically quieter summer period.

Rates staying higher for longer. The Fed is expected to hold the target rate at 3.50–3.75% through year-end, with market pricing having shifted from expectations of cuts to the possibility of further hikes over the next 12 months. Ten-year Treasury yields remain in the mid-to-high 4% range — a cost-of-capital environment far above the sub-1% rates that powered 2021’s boom and a persistent headwind for growth-stage valuations.

Inflation reaccelerating. Supply chain pressures tied to the Middle East conflict and commodity shortages in oil, fertilizer, and helium are pushing both headline and core inflation further from the Fed’s 2% target. Startup input costs — cloud infrastructure, talent, real estate — remain elevated across New York’s expensive operating environment.

Tech sector layoffs. Nearly 125,000 tech job cuts have been announced year-to-date, with a rising percentage attributed to AI-driven workflow consolidation. Many established startups are going “AI-first,” retooling operations around agents to drive growth with leaner teams — a dynamic that compresses hiring and changes the talent market for early-stage companies competing for engineers.

Capital concentration risk. The extraordinary dominance of AI megarounds creates headline numbers that flatter the broader market. J.P. Morgan explicitly notes this dynamic: if frontier AI labs absorb the majority of available LP capital, the reallocation effect on the rest of the venture market could be negative — crowding out diversified fund strategies and intensifying competition for the best early-stage assets outside AI.

NYC’s Structural Strengths in the AI Era

Despite those macro risks, New York enters the second half of 2026 with structural advantages that position it well for sustained AI-era venture activity. The city’s comparative strengths are precisely those that AI amplifies.

Financial services — where AI is restructuring trading, risk, compliance, and customer acquisition at scale — remains New York’s defining sector advantage. Ramp, AlphaSense, Chronograph, Digital Asset, and Taktile all closed large Q2 rounds at the intersection of finance and AI. Healthcare, where AI-powered diagnostics and care coordination are attracting institutional capital from both traditional VCs and strategic health system investors, produced four top-25 Q2 rounds. Enterprise software, where the density of Fortune 500 headquarters creates both customers and acquirers for AI-native startups, drove 46% of all sector capital.

The infrastructure layer is also strengthening. Cornell Tech on Roosevelt Island, the NYU Center for Data Science, and Columbia’s engineering school are producing AI-native talent at scale. J.P. Morgan notes that several funds are formalizing early-stage innovation by incubating ideas inside internal labs or partnering with independent ones before spinning the most promising concepts into standalone ventures — a structure NYC’s dense institutional environment is well-suited to support. And with Flourish and General Intuition now operating research facilities in Manhattan, the city has a new magnet for the research talent that historically defaulted to San Francisco.

Historical Context and H2 2026 Outlook

At $17.7 billion raised through H1 2026 across 504 deals, New York is already approaching 2025’s full-year total of $19.1 billion with six months remaining. On current pace, 2026 is tracking toward a full-year figure that would make it the second-most-funded year in the city’s history — behind only the 2021 peak of $35.3 billion. Unlike 2021, which was driven partly by zero interest rates and FOMO-era valuations across all stages, 2026’s capital concentration reflects genuine commercial traction at the companies receiving the largest checks.

Q3 is historically NYC venture’s quietest period — summer deal flow moderates as partners travel and investment committees slow. The AlleyWatch seasonal data confirms this pattern across every year from 2012 to 2025. That said, the tailwinds entering Q3 2026 are unusually strong: the reopened IPO window creates urgency for late-stage companies to move quickly, General Intuition is already reported to be in conversations for a Series B, and Flourish’s SoHo buildout will be a magnet for AI research talent.

The city that raised $8.88 billion in a single quarter — including the best funding month on record — is not evenly distributing that capital. The winners of the NYC AI era are being selected now, and the Q2 2026 data makes clear the selection process is moving fast.

Methodology & Sources. NYC quarterly and monthly funding figures sourced from the AlleyWatch NYC Funding Index (funding.alleywatch.com), updated daily.
