Target is voluntarily recalling certain Up & Up branded wipes over a potential contamination.
Up & Up Fragrance-Free and Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes were pulled off shelves following customer complaints and FDA testing that identified traces of bacteria in the products, according to a June 5 notice from the Food & Drug Administration.
Target and Turkish manufacturer Sapro Temizlik Urunleri received reports from customers alleging that symptoms like skin irritation, eye irritation and infections had occurred following the use of the recalled baby wipes. Customers also flagged product discoloration.
“Use of products contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioi may result in serious and life-threatening infections,” the notice reads. “The products are predominantly used on newborns, infants, and young children, who are particularly vulnerable to opportunistic infection due to their immature immune systems.”
The use of the recalled product on immunocompromised individuals, including infants and young children, can potentially lead to life-threatening sepsis or pneumonia, as infection is more likely to spread into the bloodstream.
“These reports remain under investigation. Target is coordinating with the manufacturer and continues to investigate this matter,” the notice said.
Sapro Temizlik Urunleri did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.
Target: ‘Immediately Stop’ Using Recalled Baby Wipes
Those affected by the recall are encouraged to “immediately stop” using the recalled products and return them to any Target store for a full refund.
According to the notice, the recalled wipes were manufactured by a supplier and sold at Target stores nationwide and online at Target.com. Additional questions or concerns can be directed to Target Guest Relations at 1-800-440-0680 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT daily.
