Michigan Seniors: 400,000 Households Still Haven’t Claimed the ,200 Home Heating Credit — And You Can Still Get It This Spring

If you’re a Michigan senior struggling with rising utility bills, there’s a good chance you’re leaving money on the table. Every year, hundreds of thousands of eligible households fail to claim the Home Heating Credit, a state benefit designed to help cover winter energy costs. The surprising part is that you can still apply well into the year, even if winter is already over. In fact, the deadline to claim this benefit for the current tax year extends into the fall, giving seniors a second chance to get much-needed relief.

Here’s what you need to know about how it works, why so many people miss it, and how you can still claim it this spring.

What the Michigan Home Heating Credit Really Is

The Michigan Home Heating Credit is a state program that helps low-income households pay for heating costs from the previous year. It’s not a loan (you don’t pay it back), and it can be issued as a refund or applied directly to your utility bill.

Both homeowners and renters can qualify, as long as they meet income and residency requirements. Importantly, you do not need to file a standard tax return to claim it. A lot of people assume that the credit is tied to filing taxes, but it’s not. That’s important for many people who could benefit.

Why So Many Seniors Haven’t Claimed It

Despite being widely available, the Home Heating Credit is often overlooked. Many seniors assume they don’t qualify because they live on Social Security or have modest savings.

In reality, eligibility is based on total household income, size, and heating costs, not just employment income. Others simply don’t know the application exists or believe the deadline has already passed. That confusion leads to hundreds of thousands of unclaimed benefits each year.

You Can Still Apply This Spring (And Beyond)

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you have to apply during tax season. In Michigan, the deadline to file for the Home Heating Credit typically runs until September 30. That means you can still apply in the spring and even into late summer. This extended window is especially helpful for seniors who need extra time or assistance completing forms. If you haven’t applied yet, you’re not too late.

You Don’t Need to File a Full Tax Return

Many retirees skip the credit because they don’t normally file taxes. This makes it accessible even if your only income is Social Security. Free tax preparation services are also available throughout Michigan to help with the process. That means there’s no cost barrier to applying.

Also, it’s important to note that eligibility is more flexible than most people assume. In many cases, households earning up to around 110% of the federal poverty level may qualify. There are also different calculation methods that can increase eligibility depending on your situation. Even if you think your income is slightly too high, it’s still worth applying. The only way to know for sure is to complete the form.

The Credit Amount Can Vary

The amount you receive depends on your income, household size, and heating costs. While some households receive smaller credits, others may qualify for significantly higher amounts.

In certain cases, maximum credits can reach well over $1,000 depending on eligibility factors. Even a few hundred dollars can help offset rising energy bills.

On top of that, claiming the Home Heating Credit can do more than just lower your utility bill. It can also connect you to other assistance programs like energy discounts or emergency relief. These programs can provide ongoing savings throughout the year. Some utility providers even offer monthly bill credits for qualifying households.

How to Apply Without the Stress

Applying for the Michigan Home Heating Credit is simpler than many people expect. You’ll need to complete Form MI-1040CR-7, which is available online or at local agencies. If you’re unsure how to fill it out, free help is available through community organizations and tax assistance programs. You can submit the form by mail or electronically, depending on your preference. It’s as easy as that!

Don’t Leave Money on the Table This Year

The Michigan Home Heating Credit is one of the simplest ways for seniors to get financial help with rising energy costs. It’s flexible, widely available, and still open for applications well into the year. The biggest mistake isn’t applying incorrectly; it’s not applying at all. If you think you might qualify, it’s worth taking a few minutes to find out. That small step could put hundreds (or even over a thousand) dollars back in your pocket.
