Most people don’t think about taxes until January, but the volunteers who help millions of older Americans file for free are already preparing for next year’s filing season. Their work begins months before tax forms arrive, and knowing about these programs early can help retirees avoid expensive preparation fees, claim overlooked tax breaks, and secure an appointment before schedules fill up. If you’re 60 or older, here is what you need to know about free tax counseling services before appointment calendars begin filling up next filing season.

Free Tax Counseling Is Designed Specifically for Older Adults

Some retirees assume they no longer need to file a tax return once they stop working. However, Social Security benefits, pension income, retirement account withdrawals, investment income, and state tax credits can all affect whether filing is required or beneficial, making free tax counseling especially valuable.

Professional tax preparation often costs well over $200 for even moderately complex returns. For retirees on fixed incomes, receiving the same basic filing assistance at no cost can leave more money available for housing, healthcare, groceries, and other essentials.

The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program has provided free tax assistance to older Americans since Congress established it in 1978. The IRS awards grants to nonprofit organizations and community partners that recruit and train volunteers to prepare federal tax returns for people age 60 and older.

Unlike general tax preparation services, TCE volunteers receive specialized training on retirement-related issues such as Social Security benefits, pension income, required minimum distributions, and retirement tax credits. Many TCE locations are operated through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program, although taxpayers do not have to be AARP members to receive assistance.

During the most recent filing season, more than 28,000 volunteers helped over 1.7 million taxpayers receive more than $1.3 billion in refunds and credits, demonstrating just how significant these programs have become for older Americans and other eligible taxpayers. The IRS offers an online locator tool each filing season that helps taxpayers find nearby TCE and VITA sites, while AARP Foundation Tax-Aide also maintains a searchable directory of participating locations.

Preparations Begin Long Before Tax Returns Are Due

Many taxpayers assume these programs simply open their doors in February, but months of preparation happen behind the scenes first. Volunteer recruitment often begins during the summer and fall, followed by extensive IRS training and certification before tax season opens. Community organizations secure libraries, senior centers, churches, and community buildings where appointments will eventually take place.

Updated tax software must also be installed and tested to reflect the latest federal tax rules. By the time filing season officially begins, thousands of trained volunteers are already prepared to help older adults file accurate returns. It’s also important to note that many Tax-Aide and TCE sites operate by appointment, and some communities reach capacity well before the April filing deadline, making early planning especially important.

Seniors Receive More Than Basic Tax Preparation

The value of free tax help for seniors extends well beyond simply filling out tax forms. Volunteers help retirees understand how Social Security benefits are taxed, determine whether retirement distributions are reported correctly, and identify deductions or credits they may have overlooked. They can also answer questions about pension income, estimated tax payments, and certain retirement-related filing requirements.

Planning Ahead Makes the Filing Process Easier

Even though appointments may not begin for several months, retirees can start preparing today. Creating a folder for Social Security benefit statements, pension documents, retirement account distributions, charitable donation records, and medical expense receipts can make tax preparation much smoother. Keeping these documents organized throughout the year also reduces the likelihood of forgetting important tax information.

Early Awareness Can Save Money and Reduce Stress

Waiting until March to start thinking about taxes often creates unnecessary stress. By learning where your nearest free tax counseling site is now and organizing your paperwork throughout the year, you’ll be in a much better position when filing season arrives. A few minutes of preparation today could save both money and frustration next spring.
