Google Is Slowly Killing The Websites That Built It

For almost 30 years, Google worked the same way.

Websites created the content.

Google indexed it.

Users clicked the links.

Everyone benefited.

That deal is starting to fall apart.

Google still controls roughly 90% of global search.

Now it puts AI answers at the top of the page.

Most people never need to scroll.

They never click.

They get the answer and leave.

The numbers are getting hard to ignore.

Multiple studies from 2025 and 2026 found that when an AI Overview appears, organic clicks to websites fall anywhere from 35% to 60%.

Some studies found the number one search result loses as much as 58% of its clicks.

Zero click searches now account for roughly 60% to 70% of all Google searches.

On many informational searches, it is even higher.

Even links inside Google’s own AI summary barely get clicked.

Some studies put that number around 1%.

That changes everything.

News sites.

How to sites.

Review sites.

Independent blogs.

Small publishers.

Many are already reporting double digit traffic losses.

Some have lost 40% to 60% of their Google traffic.

Google says it still sends billions of clicks every year.

That is true.

Search volume is enormous.

But the percentage of people actually leaving Google keeps falling.

That is what matters.

Imagine owning a restaurant.

Ten thousand people walk past every day.

Last year one thousand came inside.

Today only four hundred do.

You cannot pay employees with foot traffic.

You need customers.

The internet works the same way.

Most websites are built on advertising.

Subscriptions.

Affiliate sales.

Those only work when people actually visit the site.

Now Google uses those same websites to train AI, answers the question itself, and keeps the user on Google.

The publisher does the work.

Google keeps the visitor.

That business model doesn’t last forever.

Some publishers are already talking about blocking Google’s crawlers or refusing AI training because the traffic no longer justifies giving their content away.

The websites that survive will probably be the ones people visit on purpose.

Communities.

Forums.

Apps.

Tools.

Strong brands.

Places people trust enough to type the address directly.

Everyone else has a problem.

The internet used to be a search engine pointing people to websites.

Now it is becoming an answer engine that keeps people inside one website.

If Google controls about 90% of search, and fewer people leave Google every year, then a huge part of the open web is slowly losing the audience that kept it alive.

The trend is already here.

The only question is how many websites disappear before people realize what changed.
