Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is adding a new button to the Windows keyboard to activate its artificial intelligence Copilot service, marking the first significant change to the Windows PC keyboard in nearly three decades.
The company noted that over the coming days leading up to and at the CES technology conference the Copilot key will come up on many of the new Windows 11 PCs from its ecosystem partners, with availability starting in late February through Spring, including on upcoming Surface devices.
“The new key will invoke the Copilot in Windows experience to make it seamless to engage Copilot in your day to day,” according to a blog post by Yusuf Mehdi, executive vice president, Consumer chief marketing officer.
About 30 years ago, the company introduced the Windows key to the PC keyboard which enabled people to interact with Windows.
“We see this as another transformative moment in our journey with Windows where Copilot will be the entry point into the world of AI on the PC,” said Mehdi.
Copilot helps users create images, write content and summarize text with the help of AI. The AI tool also helps turn your ideas into songs, among other features.
Microsoft noted that timing of Copilot feature delivery and availability would vary by market and device and requires a Microsoft account to log in. When Copilot for Windows is not available or enabled on the device, pressing the Copilot key will launch Windows Search.
