7 Warning Signs an Older Adult May Be Under Financial Pressure
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

Financial pressure often starts with subtle warning signs like secrecy, unusual withdrawals, or controlling relationships. Recognizing these changes early can help protect an older adult’s savings and independence. DexonDee/Shutterstock

It often starts with what seems like a harmless favor. A relative offers to help pay bills online. A new friend insists on accompanying an older adult to the bank. A caregiver suggests changing account access “to make things easier.” Most offers of help are genuine, but some gradually turn into financial pressure or outright exploitation. My wife’s family had to deal with elder abuse and exploitation with her grandmother, and it is a complete nightmare. Everything you have to do to ensure they are safe and “okay” in the situation is exhausting. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, financial exploitation is one of the most common forms of elder abuse, affecting countless older Americans each year. Here are seven warning signs every family member should be aware of.

1. Sudden Secrecy About Financial Decisions

Pay close attention to how older adults talk about money. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has published information that points out that isolation and controlling behavior frequently accompany financial exploitation.  Someone who has always been open about finances may suddenly become secretive or defensive without a clear explanation. They may say someone instructed them not to discuss certain transactions or insist that “everything is under control” while avoiding basic questions. This secrecy is often encouraged by individuals attempting to isolate the victim from trusted family members or advisors. You might even notice them suddenly no longer attending family events or cutting people off. If it’s out of the blue, it’s worth paying attention to.

2. Unexplained Withdrawals or Large Gifts

Unexpected financial activity deserves attention, particularly when it doesn’t fit established spending habits. Large cash withdrawals (or frequent ATM withdrawals), repeated wire transfers, expensive purchases, or generous gifts to new acquaintances can all indicate outside pressure. Sometimes an older adult is convinced they’re helping someone in an emergency, paying a fake debt, or investing in an opportunity that doesn’t exist. Other times, someone close to them repeatedly asks for “small loans” that quickly add up.

3. A New Person Suddenly Takes Control

It’s natural for older adults to rely on trusted people for assistance, but abrupt changes deserve careful attention. Exploitation often begins with offers to help before gradually expanding into financial decision-making. A recently introduced friend, romantic partner, caregiver, or distant relative who quickly becomes involved in financial matters may be exercising unhealthy influence. They may insist on accompanying the older adult to the bank, speaking on their behalf, or discouraging others from participating in financial conversations. In many documented cases of elder financial exploitation, the relationship develops gradually before financial requests begin.

4. Bills Go Unpaid Despite Adequate Income

The Department of Justice lists unpaid bills despite available resources as a significant indicator that financial exploitation may be occurring. An older adult who has always paid bills on time may suddenly begin receiving late notices or utility shutoff warnings. Mortgage payments, insurance premiums, or prescription costs may be neglected even though sufficient retirement income exists. This can happen when someone else gains access to financial accounts or diverts money for personal use. It may also signal confusion or cognitive decline, making professional evaluation appropriate.

5. Pressure to Sign Documents Quickly

Legitimate financial professionals encourage clients to understand documents before signing them. Someone attempting financial manipulation often creates urgency by insisting paperwork must be signed immediately or discouraging questions. These documents may involve property deeds, powers of attorney, beneficiary changes, loans, or account ownership. Older adults should never feel rushed into signing paperwork they don’t fully understand, regardless of who presents it. The DOJ specifically warns that signing legal documents without understanding them is a common feature of financial abuse cases. Some examples include:

changing beneficiaries
signing a deed
opening joint accounts
changing powers of attorney

6. Fear, Anxiety, or Emotional Withdrawal Around Money

Financial pressure often leaves emotional clues before financial losses become obvious. An older adult may become unusually anxious whenever finances are discussed or appear fearful of disappointing a particular person. Victims often say things like, “I just don’t want to upset them.” They may avoid conversations, change the subject, or seem reluctant to make decisions independently. Some victims worry they’ll lose caregiving support, housing, companionship, or family relationships if they refuse financial requests. Pay close attention when someone appears afraid of a caregiver, friend, or relative who seems unusually controlling.

7. Family Members Notice Major Personality Changes

Sometimes the biggest red flag is behavioral. An independent parent who suddenly relies entirely on someone else for every decision may be experiencing manipulation or coercion. Family members may notice increased isolation, confusion about financial matters, or reluctance to meet privately. While personality changes can have medical causes, they can also indicate someone is exerting inappropriate financial control.

That being said, these types of behavioral changes can be attributed to health issues too. Changes in medication, dementia, and depression can all present this way as well. So, approach the situation with grace and understanding.

What Families Should Do If Something Doesn’t Feel Right

If you suspect an older adult is being pressured about money, begin by having a calm conversation instead of making accusations. Ask open-ended questions about recent financial decisions and whether anyone has asked them to keep transactions secret. Encourage them to review bank accounts with a trusted financial advisor or attorney if unusual activity has occurred. If exploitation appears likely, Adult Protective Services, local law enforcement, or the older adult’s financial institution may be able to help stop additional losses.

Protecting Independence Starts With Honest Conversations

Financial exploitation rarely begins with someone emptying an account overnight. More often, it starts with small requests, increasing control, and subtle pressure that builds over weeks or months. Families who recognize those early warning signs have a much better chance of preventing significant financial losses while preserving an older adult’s dignity and independence. Trust your instincts if something feels different, ask questions with compassion, and don’t hesitate to seek professional guidance when concerns arise. A simple conversation today may prevent a heartbreaking financial loss tomorrow.
