Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

New York City startups raised $1.81B across 53 deals in July 2026, a purposeful step down from June’s exceptional $3.90B that reflected the city’s strongest single funding month on record. The pullback is better understood as a return to the ecosystem’s underlying pace than as a sign of weakness: the 2026 YTD total now stands at $17.41B across 521 deals, up 56% in capital versus the same seven months in 2025. July’s average deal size of $34.2M was 40% higher than July 2025’s $24.4M, pointing to continued compression in deal count alongside expanding round sizes at the companies that are closing.

July 2026: The Month in Detail

July’s headline figure needs context: June 2026 was the largest single funding month in AlleyWatch history, so the 54% MOM decline in capital is a reversion to baseline, not a contraction. Across the last 12 months, July’s $1.81B is the second-lowest reading after August 2025’s $1.20B, a pattern consistent with the seasonal moderation that historically hits the NYC market in summer. What makes July 2026 distinctive is the quality distribution: fewer deals at higher average sizes, with late-stage capital flowing decisively to a small number of proven platforms.

Wonder’s $650M Series D was the month’s dominant event. Marc Lore’s food-technology company, which operates a mealtime marketplace combining restaurant meals, meal kits, and delivery through its Infinite Kitchen robotics infrastructure, has now raised more than $3B in total equity. Backed by New Enterprise Associates, AllianceBernstein, ARK Invest, and Accel, the round reflects sustained institutional conviction in a vertical that blends physical operations with proprietary technology at scale.

Financial services and infrastructure claimed another large share of July capital. CAIS raised $170M in a Series D backed by Fortress, Vista, RBC, and AllianceBernstein, extending the alternative investment platform’s reach into independent wealth channels managing trillions in assets. Gauntlet closed $125M from SBI Group for its DeFi quantitative risk management platform — a round that places the Brooklyn-based company at the intersection of on-chain finance and institutional risk management at a moment when both are scaling rapidly.

Norm AI’s $120M Series C was the month’s most consequential AI round, backed by Bain Capital, Khosla, Coatue, Vanguard, and TIAA. The company embeds legal reasoning directly into AI agents, automating compliance and legal workflows in regulated environments. The participation of Vanguard and TIAA — both major financial institutions — signals that the enterprise AI governance market has moved from early adopters into mainstream institutional infrastructure. Cover Genius followed with $111M for its insurance distribution platform, and Pearl Health’s $50M Series C advanced its value-based primary care model backed by Andreessen Horowitz and Viking Global.

The Series A cohort was the month’s most revealing signal. Henry AI ($16.5M, FirstMark and Y Combinator), Baselayer ($20.0M, Torch Capital and Founder Collective), and dili ($15.0M, Khosla and Y Combinator) all closed in the same month — three companies applying AI to commercial real estate, B2B fraud and risk, and construction compliance respectively. The cluster reflects a structural shift in where Series A capital is going in 2026: not broad horizontal AI tools, but deep vertical applications in industries where regulatory complexity and data fragmentation have historically limited software penetration.

Early-stage volume remained healthy with 37 deals. Harmony’s $34M seed from Lightspeed for its enterprise service management platform was the largest of the group. Overtone ($18M, Match Group and FirstMark) and SONATA ($7M, Lux Capital) added health and dating to the month’s sector mix, while defense technology made an appearance and fintech infrastructure stayed active with Cordant, KelAI, and M1X Global all closing in July.

Looking Ahead: NYC Startup Funding Q3 2026

With $17.41B raised through the first seven months of 2026, NYC is already at 91% of its full-year 2025 total with five months remaining. The 56% YTD capital increase over the same period last year is being driven primarily by the expansion in average deal size — $34.2M in July versus $24.4M a year ago — rather than volume. That pattern, consistent across Q2 and into Q3, suggests the ecosystem is becoming more concentrated at the top while the early-stage market remains active but stable.

The July data reinforces that AI infrastructure, financial services, and compliance automation are the three verticals commanding the most conviction. The appearance of Norm AI, dili, Henry AI, and Baselayer in the same month’s cohort — all attacking regulation-heavy industries with AI — is not coincidental. These are exactly the markets where switching costs are high, customer acquisition is relationship-driven, and software has historically been under-penetrated. Q3 will test whether that concentration holds as summer deal pace normalizes, but the YTD trajectory suggests 2026 is on course to become one of the strongest funding years in the NYC ecosystem’s history.
