Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders open April 24—here’s what to know before paying 9

Nintendo’s follow-up to its hybrid juggernaut is finally up for grabs — well, in theory.

At midnight ET on April 24, major U.S. retailers opened Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders at the promised $449.99.

Within minutes, carts crashed, queues froze, and “order canceled” emails piled up.

The frenzy feels familiar, but this time the buy-in is Nintendo’s highest launch price ever.

Before you join the scramble — or cave to a scalper — here’s what matters, broken down section-by-section in plain English and capped at 250 words apiece.

Sticker shock and what your $449 actually buys

Nintendo’s official bundle contains the console, a revamped dock, two Joy-Con 2 controllers, straps, and the usual cables — no pack-in game.

A Mario Kart World set at $499.99 adds the racer digitally and a themed Joy-Con grip. Accessory prices crept upward: Joy-Con pairs are $85, the Pro pad about $75, and a spare dock is $99.

Developers confirm each Switch 2 game card now carries 64 GB out of the gate, helping justify a baseline $69–$79 software tier.

Why the surcharge?

Nintendo claims the console now competes against premium handheld PCs, not last gen’s $299 Switch. The question is whether families who made the original a 125 million-unit hit will accept a 50 % jump during an inflation squeeze.

Hardware: Finally 1080p handheld, 4K docked

The new machine keeps the tablet-plus-dock concept but overhauls the guts.

A 7.9-inch HDR10 LCD runs at 1080p and up to 120 Hz with variable refresh, a smoother step beyond even the Switch OLED’s 60 Hz. Inside sits a custom NVIDIA SoC with DLSS upscaling and hardware ray tracing, delivering up to 4K/60 fps on a TV. Nintendo won’t quote teraflops, yet dev kits report roughly ten times the Switch graphics when DLSS kicks in.

Storage grows to 256 GB (UFS), expandable via the speedy microSD Express format; older microSDs store media only. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth audio are finally native, and the 5,220 mAh battery lasts 2–6.5 hours, depending on load — about equal to the 2019 refresh Switch.

The Joy-Con 2 latch magnetically and add an optical “mouse sensor” on the bottom for pointer-style play, but they still use traditional potentiometer sticks, so drift skepticism lingers.

Launch timeline and regional pricing

Nintendo locks in a global release on June 5, 2025. Price tags: $449 (US), £395 (UK), and ¥49,980 (Japan).

The company delayed U.S. pre-orders two weeks, citing tariff uncertainty, then dropped the date quietly via press release — sparking a minor PR backlash.

Japan ran a My Nintendo lottery and logged 2.2 million applications for the first shipment; Europe’s initial stock vanished in under an hour.

President Shuntaro Furukawa warns demand will “far exceed supply through summer.”

How to pre-order Nintendo Switch 2

At midnight ET, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy opened orders.

Target’s cart crashed, Walmart used a vague queue, and Best Buy stalled 25 minutes before showing an “Add to Cart” button—only to cancel many checkouts.

GameStop launched an 11 a.m. in-store wave with trade-in credit for old Switch consoles.

Your best shot now?

Nintendo’s own invite system: register on My Nintendo with a 12-month Switch Online subscription and at least 50 hours of play. Invitations roll out May 8, each good for 72 hours.

It’s a scalper filter, but newcomers are locked out. Everyone else must stalk restock trackers—or wait. Historically, Nintendo ships new lots every three to four weeks once production stabilizes.

First-party launch games and exclusive titles

Launch day brings Mario Kart World, finally ending the eight-year MK8 reign. B

uilt exclusively for Switch 2, it flaunts 12-player online races and 120 fps local splitscreen. Two “Switch 2 Edition” upgrades drop alongside: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom now run at 4 K/60 fps with faster loads and an optional narrative hint system voiced by Zelda herself.

July packs Donkey Kong Bananza (a 3D jungle romp) and Super Mario Party Jamboree with companion-app TV modes.

August adds Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star-Crossed World — an expansion, plus a performance patch.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond launches cross-gen later in the year, offering dual performance modes on Switch 2.

For once, big AAA names show up on day one.

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate lands complete with Phantom Liberty, leveraging DLSS to hit 60 fps handheld. Capcom brings Street Fighter 6 with Amiibo unlocks, while WB’s Hogwarts Legacy debuts on a Nintendo system after skipping Switch 1. Firaxis’s Civilization VII arrives with Joy-Con “mouse” controls; Square Enix ports Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade,

Over 100 games are reportedly in development, including Borderlands 4 and FromSoftware’s The Duskbloods for 2026. Nintendo also confirmed GameCube classics via Switch Online’s Expansion tier—an olive branch to retro fans.

How it stacks up to rivals

Versus PS5 / Xbox Series X: Sony and Microsoft still deliver more raw pixels — 10+ TFLOPS versus the Switch 2’s estimated ~4. But neither console can ride the subway.

On a 4 K TV, PlayStation’s Spider-Man 2 looks sharper than Switch 2’s upscaled output, yet Spider-Man in bed or on a flight simply isn’t possible outside remote streaming.

Versus Steam Deck: Valve’s handheld is bulkier, runs hotter, and starts at $549 for 512 GB. The Deck plays PC libraries and mods, but struggles with newer AAA titles unless settings drop. Switch 2’s tighter OS and DLSS let Street Fighter 6 hit a locked 60 fps the Deck can’t match without tweaks.

Battery life is similar — 2–3 hours on graphically intense games—but Nintendo’s ecosystem offers exclusives and simpler plug-and-play.

Value call: If fidelity tops your list, buy a PS5. If openness does, the Deck beckons.

If portable first-party Nintendo magic plus “good-enough” 4 K docked play appeals, Switch 2 lands in a sweet spot unprecedented for Big N.

Early reactions: Hype meets hesitation

Nintendo’s reveal trailer hit 30 million views in three days and a million likes, dwarfing initial PS5 numbers. Social chatter loves the deeper online integration — built-in voice/video GameChat (free until March 2026) and a GameShare demo-share feature.

Backlash centers on price. Many argue $449 is “tone-deaf” during a cost-of-living squeeze, especially since Switch 1 will still retail at $299.

Techies lament the lack of an OLED screen and Hall-effect sticks. Others fear a repeat of Joy-Con drift. Nintendo claims redesigned internals reduce wear, but absent magnetic sensors, only time will tell. The microSD Express requirement also rankles collectors with terabytes of legacy files—they’ll need pricier cards or redownload libraries.

All told, sentiment skews cautiously optimistic: performance leap confirmed, exclusive games secured, but supply woes and accessory costs temper excitement.

Red flags and buying advice

While the Switch 2 is generating plenty of excitement, potential buyers should keep a few caution flags in mind.

Short supply is guaranteed through summer; Nintendo itself said so. Expect bots and scalpers listing consoles at $700+. Unless you pre-order, patience or persistence will be essential.
Ecosystem cost adds up: console + two games + Pro pad + 1 TB card can break $700 fast. Budget accordingly or wait for holiday bundles.
Hardware unknowns include long-term Joy-Con durability, battery drain on demanding titles, and whether DLSS-powered 4 K will look crisp or slightly soft. Early reviewers praised clarity, but pixel-peepers may notice reconstruction artifacts.
Scalper bait: Resist paying more than MSRP. Nintendo historically restocks monthly; the original Switch became easy to find within eight months. Consider trade-in programs (GameStop, Best Buy) to offset the cost.

If you’re on the fence, remember most launch titles — aside from Mario Kart World — are enhanced versions or cross-gen. Your current Switch still plays them, albeit less prettily.

Either way, the Switch 2 looks poised to carry Nintendo’s hybrid experiment through another half-decade.

Just approach pre-order day with a plan, a backup plan, and maybe a third cup of coffee.
