Brussels-based Wooclap, a Belgian edtech SaaS company specialising in pedagogical engagement and active learning platforms, has raised €25M in funding.
The round was led by Impact Expansion, a €150M private equity fund that provides growth capital and buyouts for mission-driven businesses.
Impact Expansion becomes the lead financial investor, investing alongside the founders and historical shareholders, who will continue supporting the company’s next growth phase. Finance&Invest.brussels co-invests alongside Impact Expansion.
Baudouin Corman, CEO of Wooclap, says, “Active engagement is at the heart of every successful learning experience, and empowering educators is the key to making that possible. We’re proud of our team, our community of users, and our partners who bring this vision to life every day in classrooms and training rooms around the world.”
“With Impact Expansion by our side, we are ready to accelerate our growth, drive innovation, and partner with educators to shape the future of active learning.”
Transforming learning through engagement
Wooclap is an edtech platform that enables higher education institutions and corporations to increase learner engagement and retention in in-person and online settings.
The platform allows educators and trainers to turn lectures and training sessions into interactive experiences and provides tools to track understanding and strengthen skill acquisition.
Founded in 2015 by Sébastien Lebbe and Jonathan Alzetta, with support from Olivier Verdin, Wooclap places the learner at the centre of the process. Based on cognitive science, the platform offers interactive activities such as multiple-choice questions, polls, word clouds, brainstorms, and image annotations.
Wooclap integrates with existing tools, including LMS, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Teams, and is used by over 50 million learners worldwide.
The company has also developed Wooflash, a microlearning app that uses AI and spaced repetition to support knowledge retention and learning outcomes.
Through these tools, Wooclap transforms learning by turning passive sessions into interactive experiences, measuring understanding in real time, and providing methods for learners to strengthen and retain skills.
Capital utilisation
Wooclap will use the funds to accelerate its international growth, focusing on the North American higher education market and the corporate learning sector.
The investment will support the development of AI-powered features to increase learner engagement and advance active pedagogy.
The Belgian edtech company also plans to expand its platform to more institutions and learners worldwide. New partners will join existing organisations such as Sorbonne University, University of Sheffield, Duke University, Dior, Pernod Ricard, Onepoint, and the Red Cross for their learning and development programs.
Sébastien Lebbe, co-founder and chairman of Wooclap, says, “Since day one, we’ve believed that every learner should be empowered to take an active role in their learning. This investment brings us closer to that vision and gives us the means to continue building tools that truly support educators and learning designers around the world.”
Gilles Davignon and Karen de Vits, Managing Director and Investment Manager at Impact Expansion, mention, “We’re thrilled to back a company and a team that combines tech excellence and pedagogical depth with measurable impact on learning. Wooclap is redefining the way knowledge is shared and absorbed, providing immediate value to teachers and instructors to achieve their mission.”
