Lidl is recalling “all lots” of its chocolate ladybugs over a labeling mishap.
The German-owned discount supermarket chain initiated the recall after discovering the product, which contained tree nuts, was distributed in packaging that did not disclose the presence of hazelnuts. Consumers have yet to report an illness in connection with the recall.
Because Favorina Chocolate Ladybugs contain an “undeclared hazelnut allergen,” customers who purchased the product run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if and when the German style nougat is consumed.
According to a March 12 notice posted by the Food and Drug Administration, Favorina’s Chocolate Ladybugs were distributed and sold to Lidl stores in the District of Columbia and nine states, including Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia.
“The health and safety of our customers is our top priority. Lidl US regrets any inconvenience related to this voluntary recall,” Lidl US said in a statement. “Our Quality Assurance Department is constantly working to ensure that all products on our shelves meet the high-quality standards that we would expect when feeding our own families.”
“We are grateful for all our Lidl US customers who choose to shop with us every day,” Lidl US added.
