Pet insurance discounts vary by insurer and by state. The most prominent discounts offered are for insuring multiple pets, having multiple policies with the same insurer, and for military members. Discounts can typically be stacked, but ask an agent to confirm.

The latest available data indicates that more than one-third of pet owners have more than one pet. If you’re buying pet insurance and have more than one dog or cat, securing a multi-pet discount is a nice perk.

Multi-pet insurance discounts are generally 5% or 10% per pet. Here’s a look at discounts among all of the pet insurance companies we evaluated.

Pet insurers offering up to 5% multi-pet discount:

AKC

Costco

Figo

Pet insurers offering up to 10% multi-pet discount:

A multipolicy discount, also called a bundling discount, comes about when you buy your pet insurance and have at least one other type of insurance from the same insurer, such as an auto, home, renters or life insurance policy.

Here are the companies we found in our assessment that offer a bundling discount:

The following pet insurers offer a discount for being a member of the military:

Costco (Figo plans)

GEICO (Embrace plans)

Embrace

Figo

Liberty Mutual

Metlife

USAA can also be a good pick for military members, as it sells exclusively to the military community and gives a discount for members with a service dog.

Discounts can help bring down the total premium you’ll pay for pet insurance. Many pet insurers offer valuable discounts. Here are tips on how to find the discounts you’re eligible for.

The best way to get the best discounts and the lowest overall premium for pet insurance is to get personalized pet insurance quotes from at least three companies. Premiums can vary based on your pet’s breed, age, location, and chosen coverage, so make sure you enter the exact same information for quotes. Many discounts are automatically applied during the quoting process and help you save on your total premium.

Learn more: How to compare pet insurance quotes

While many discounts are given when you apply for pet insurance, some you may need to ask about, which is why you should ask an agent if there are other discounts you qualify for that will help reduce your premium.

Learn more: Is pet insurance worth it?

Some employers offer pet insurance as a voluntary benefit that comes with a discount. Ask your employer if this is an option available to you. There are also discounts offered with membership, such as Costco’s partnership with Figo, which gives its Gold Star and Business members a 15% discount on pet insurance.

Check with the insurance company you already have auto, home, or renters insurance with to see if they also offer pet insurance and a bundling discount. For instance, Lemonade offers a discount of up to 10% if you buy pet insurance and also have your car, home, renters, or term life insurance policy with it. And USAA offers a multipolicy discount of up to 15%.

MetLife is the best for pet insurance discounts, according to your analysis of 30 pet insurance and wellness plans. It offers a wide variety of discounts, including a multi-pet discount, military discount, buy online discount, and discounts for first responders, healthcare workers, and federal employees.

Many pet insurance discounts are automatically applied when you get your quote; however, it’s always wise to also ask an agent if there are any others you may be qualified for and can be added to lower your overall premium. You can also look for discounted pet insurance offered by an employer or a group you’re a member of, such as Costco.

Nearly all the pet insurance companies we analyzed offered a multi-pet discount, but not all did. Other common discounts include bundling discounts for holding multiple insurance policies with the insurer and a discount for military members. When getting a quote, review the applied discounts and also ask an agent if there are any other discounts available to you.

Tim Manni edited this article.

We researched the discount and cost details for 30 pet insurance and wellness plans. We then weighted categories, and each pet insurer was scored relative to the others to find the best pet insurance companies for discounts. Here are the factors we incorporated.

Pet insurance discounts: 85% of score. Insurers were evaluated on the availability and quality of pet insurance discounts. Points were awarded for each of the following discounts: Multi-pet, military, first responders/healthcare workers/federal workers/employees/affinity groups, buy online or pay in full, healthy pet, multi-policy/bundling, member, and service dog.

Average cost: 10% of score. We evaluated average costs in five states for $5,000 and unlimited coverage for a mixed-breed dog (age 1), a French bulldog (age 5), and a Labrador retriever (age 8).

Disappearing deductible: 5% of score. We awarded additional credit to insurers that offer an additional cost-saving: a diminishing deductible.
