This year has brought all sorts of twists and turns for investors.
Something called “Liberation Day” was heaved onto all our plates in April. Tariffs are still in effect. Crypto has finally been embraced by major financial institutions. And the Federal Reserve cut rates — three times.
However, as soon as the Yahoo Finance editorial team sat down to discuss our Company of the Year award, one thing became quite clear: How can this year’s winner not be grounded in AI?!
So, we whittled it down to two names: Nvidia (NVDA), which won our award in 2016 before it became everyone’s favorite stock. And OpenAI (OPAI.PVT), the ChatGPT creator that’s on a collision course to taking over the world.
The company getting the win this year: OpenAI!
“It has been a busy year,” OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar exclusively told Yahoo Finance (video above).
“We’re energized to get an award like this. It really cements, I think, what ChatGPT has become, which is the world’s default intelligence layer,” she said. “On top of that, compute has become the foundation of this next era of AI. And, I think, thirdly, it’s been a year where we have really hit kind of this day one of the next phase for OpenAI. We became a public benefit corporation. We’ve raised a lot of capital with a really strong balance sheet, and we’ve seen a lot of the ecosystem really start to move towards us, to help us create this future.”

Here is the rapid-fire Q&A Yahoo Finance did with Friar. Answers have been edited for length and clarity.
Yahoo Finance: It’s 2035. What is the biggest impact OpenAI has had?
Sarah Friar: You have brought mass intelligence to the world. We live just in a totally different world. It’s almost like imagining living in a world without electricity or living in a world without the internet.
Yahoo Finance: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in one word?
Friar: Curious.
Yahoo Finance: Best career advice you ever received?
Friar: To not fixate on perfection.
Yahoo Finance: What’s your superpower?
Friar: I am tireless, so I will never give up. My husband often says I only have an on or an off switch. But like Sam, I am too very curious, and I also will not stop until we get the thing done we need to get done.
Yahoo Finance: What is the quality you value most in leaders?
Friar: Steadfastness. What they tell you is what they do.
