National ‘Clickfit’ Campaign Expands Awareness
Criminal syndicates are increasingly deploying artificial intelligence to construct deceptive, end-to-end investment schemes that have siphoned tens of millions of dollars from Australian investors, law enforcement officials warned.
The Australian Federal Police-led Joint Policing Cybercrime Coordination Centre (JPC3) cautioned that transnational networks are utilizing AI tools to auto-generate fraudulent financial ecosystems. These sophisticated setups include counterfeit trading platforms, fake news articles, realistic landing pages, and automated chatbots.
The warning coincides with the expansion of “Clickfit,” a national cybercrime public safety initiative launched by the JPC3. Modeled after traditional road-safety campaigns, Clickfit encourages digital consumers to “stop their scroll” and evaluate online investment offers before transferring funds.
Fraudulent investment schemes represent the highest-loss scam category in Australia. Figures from national scam-tracking agency Scamwatch show investors have lost more than $31.4 million $45 million to fraudulent schemes so far this year. That follows total reported losses exceeding $111.7 million in the prior calendar year.
While retirees managing self-managed superannuation funds remain frequent targets, authorities emphasized that victims span every demographic, with losses evenly split between men and women.
“Where criminals see vulnerability and opportunity, they won’t hesitate to exploit it,” said AFP Detective Superintendent Marie Andersson. “They don’t care about the time and effort that go into building a savings account, a nest egg, or a retirement fund; they just want to steal it.”
AI-Driven Ecosystems and Social Engineering
According to JPC3 investigators, modern investment scams rely on layered tactics to build credibility. First, scammers build hyper-realistic mobile apps and web platforms. In 2025 alone, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) deactivated 12,000 scam websites and more than 1,100 social media advertisements.
They also assign network holders or handlers with localized Australian or British accents to build rapport, often posing as personal financial advisors. In addition, they introduce the initial micro-investments that display artificial gains, coaxing victims into transferring larger sums or rolling over entire retirement funds.
When victims attempt to withdraw funds, scammers freeze accounts and demand secondary “tax” or “administrative” payments before cutting off contact entirely.
Authorities in Queensland cited recent cases highlighting the speed and reach of these AI-enhanced schemes. In one case, a 29-year-old man lost $115,873 after downloading a browser extension linked to a fake cryptocurrency trading application. When funds were drained via unauthorized transactions, his attempt to contact customer support connected him to an AI chatbot, exposing the fraud.
Another woman in her 60s lost nearly $74,690 over 12 months to a fake cryptocurrency investment scam after responding to a social media advertisement with an initial $174 USD deposit. Scammers gradually convinced her to transfer her retirement superannuation funds, later demanding an additional $8,376 in fake administrative fees when she requested a withdrawal.
