When a burglar breaks into a home, they’re not wandering around randomly—they’re working fast, targeting specific spots where valuables are most likely hidden. In fact, most break-ins last just minutes, which means criminals rely on predictable patterns and common hiding places. If you think your cash or jewelry is safe in a “clever” spot, there’s a good chance it’s actually one of the first places they’ll check. Experts say burglars often head straight to the same rooms and locations because that’s where homeowners tend to stash valuables. Below are the five places burglars look immediately for money and jewelry when they break in.

Why Burglars Target the Same Spots Every Time

Burglary is typically a crime of speed and opportunity, not careful searching. Most intruders want to get in and out quickly, so they prioritize areas where valuables are commonly stored. The bedroom, especially the master bedroom, is almost always their first stop because it’s where jewelry, cash, and personal items are kept.

They also focus on places near entry points since those are easy to access and search quickly. That said, here are the five places criminals always look when they break into your home.

1. The Master Bedroom and Nightstands

The master bedroom is ground zero during most break-ins. Burglars know this is where people keep their most valuable personal items, including jewelry, watches, and cash. Nightstands, dresser tops, and jewelry boxes are checked almost immediately because they’re quick to access. Drawers are often pulled out and dumped in seconds as thieves search for hidden items. Even if your valuables aren’t in plain sight, burglars expect to find them somewhere in this room.

2. Under the Mattress or Bed

Hiding cash or jewelry under the mattress might feel secure, but it’s one of the oldest tricks in the book—and burglars know it. Experts say this is one of the first places intruders check because so many people rely on it. In fact, studies have shown that a significant percentage of burglars look here almost immediately. The same goes for under-bed storage boxes or loose items tucked beneath the frame. If you’re using this spot, you’re essentially putting your valuables right in their path.

3. Closets, Dressers, and Drawers

Closets and dresser drawers are another top target because they’re full of personal belongings where valuables are often hidden. Burglars will quickly sift through clothing pockets, shoeboxes, and folded items looking for cash or jewelry. Jewelry boxes, even when tucked away, are especially attractive because they’re easy to grab and carry. Some reports suggest a large percentage of thieves check bedroom drawers first during a break-in. If it’s a common storage spot, it’s likely already on their checklist.

4. Living Room Hiding Spots and Decorative Items

Many homeowners try to get creative by hiding valuables in plain sight—inside vases, behind picture frames, or in decorative containers. Unfortunately, burglars are familiar with these tricks and often check them quickly. Items like DVD cases, books, and even fake containers are also common hiding spots that thieves recognize. Since these areas are easy to scan, they’re often part of a burglar’s quick sweep through the home. What feels like a clever hiding place is often exactly where they expect to look.

5. Kitchens, Bathrooms, and Unexpected Spots

Some people think hiding valuables in unusual places like the kitchen pantry, freezer, or medicine cabinet will keep them safe. In reality, burglars often check these areas too, especially if they have time. Medicine cabinets are a common target not just for valuables, but for prescription drugs that can be resold. Even food containers and household items aren’t off-limits if they look suspicious. If you’ve thought of it as a hiding spot, chances are a burglar has too.

How to Outsmart a Burglar’s Search Pattern

The key to protecting your valuables is understanding that burglars rely on predictability. They don’t have time to search every inch of your home, so they focus on the most obvious and rewarding spots. This means the best hiding places are often the ones that are inconvenient, messy, or completely unexpected.

Experts suggest using heavy, bolted safes or storing valuables in areas burglars are less likely to waste time searching. Diversifying where you store items can also reduce your risk of losing everything at once. The goal is to make your home less appealing and harder to quickly search.

At the end of the day, burglars are looking for easy opportunities, not challenges. If your valuables are in predictable places, your home becomes a quick and profitable target. By avoiding common hiding spots and adding layers of security, you can significantly reduce your risk.

Where do you currently store your valuables—and after reading this, would you change anything to make your home more secure?
