7 Simple Rhythms That Bring More Peace to Our Home
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

Do you ever feel like your home is just one big cycle of messes, clutter, and to-dos that never seem to end? I know how easy it is for the day to feel like it’s slipping away in a blur of laundry piles, dishes, and scattered toys. Sometimes it feels like you’re barely keeping your head above water as you constantly tidy up but never actually feel done.

Over on Instagram, I’ve been talking about small, simple shifts that have brought more peace and order to our home. For us, I’ve found that small, simple, sustainable shifts can bring such peace and order to our home. Over the years, I’ve developed a lot of these systems — and so many of these systems run without me even really realizing it, because they are such ingrained habits!

Today, I wanted to share 7 simple rhythms that make such a difference in our home. These are small, intentional habits (nothing fancy or hard to keep up with). But these things have helped us go from feeling overwhelmed to feeling like life is a little less cluttered and chaotic and a lot more at peace.

And the best part? You can start doing these today.

Simple Household Rhythms:

Here are seven simple shifts that work for us:

1. Touch Things Once

This one has been a game-changer for us. Instead of shifting things from one spot to another or creating mini piles that seem to linger for days, I try to stick with the “touch it once” rule. Here’s how it works:

Junk mail? Straight to the trash or shredder.

Trash? Throw immediately in the garbage or recycling.

Laundry? Stain treat it (if needed) and put it right in the washer.

Email? Answer it right away if you can. Delete it if it’s junk! (Or better yet, unsubscribe!)

Piles? Put things away instead of dropping them on the floor.

You don’t save any time by just moving things to a temporary spot or letting them hang over your head. Instead, whenever possible, handle it once, and it’s done.

Less clutter. Less chaos. More peace.

2. Tidy Up Twice a Day

Our home doesn’t always look perfect, by any means, but one small habit that’s helped immensely is our two-a-day tidy-up. The kids pitch in and we all try to spend just 10 minutes after breakfast and 10 minutes before bed tidying up the main living spaces.

In the morning, it’s about getting things back in order after breakfast.

At night, it’s resetting the space so we wake up to less mess.

It’s amazing how much smoother the day flows when you start off with a clean slate. And nothing beats waking up to a clutter-free living room and kitchen! Also, if someone stops by, you can open the door without wanting to run away and hide or pretending you’re not home!

3. Stick with a Budget

I know, I know—budgeting is one of those things that can seem intimidating, but sticking with a budget has simplified our life in more ways than I can count. We’ve had a written budget since day one, and it’s given us clarity and confidence in our decisions.

Here’s what budgeting has done for us:

Simplified our day-to-day spending choices

Improved our communication about finances

Helped us gain real traction with our goals

Given us more freedom to give generously

If you’ve never tried budgeting, it’s one of the easiest ways to bring more order into your home and lives. It’s also one of the best ways to lower financial stress!

You can use my free printable budgeting spreadsheet if you want to try budgeting, but don’t know where or how to start.

4. Shop Less

It’s simple: the less you have, the less you have to manage. Before we buy something new, I try to always ask:

Do I really need this?

Can I use what I already have?

Contentment isn’t about having more—it’s about appreciating what you already have. Shopping less and focusing on using what you already own decreases clutter, brings more order, and simplifies your life. Plus, it’s fun to get creative and use what you already have!

5. Keep a Donation Bin Handy

We have a dedicated donation bin in our garage, and I can’t tell you how much easier it is to keep the clutter at bay. If something isn’t being used or isn’t bringing joy, it goes straight in the bin.

I don’t even have to think about it—when the bin is full, it gets donated. One less decision, one less pile of stuff.

6. Run the Dishwasher Daily

This one might sound simple, but it’s a lifesaver with kids. Dishes can multiply at lightning speed, especially if you’re home all day. Running the dishwasher every single night means:

No more waking up to a pile of dirty dishes

Easier cleanup during the day

One less chore to dread

Starting the day with clean dishes is an underrated luxury that brings a lot more peace to our mornings. (You can do the same with one load of laundry per day!)

7. Clean My Purse and Fridge Weekly

It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference. Once a week, I try to do a quick clean-out of my purse and our fridge.

Purse: Toss old receipts, crumpled-up snacks, and anything that doesn’t belong.

Fridge: Check for leftovers that need to be tossed, organize shelves, and make note of what we need for the week. It also encourages you to use up leftovers and re-purpose things you may have forgotten about!

The extra five or ten minutes it takes to reset these spaces brings a surprising sense of calm.

Small Habits, Big Difference

Here’s the thing: small habits add up. When you make these simple shifts part of your routine, life feels lighter. There’s less mess, less stress, and more room for the things that really matter.

If you’re ready to bring a little more peace to your own home, start with just one of these. Test it out for a week and see how it feels.
