German drone tech firm Wingcopter raises fresh funds

Wingcopter, a German drone technology company, has received fresh funding from Nordic Secondary Fund, along with continued support from existing shareholders and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The funding decision was influenced by Wingcopter’s progress toward type certification for its delivery drones in the US, Brazil, and Japan. The company is also expanding into drone-based surveying of infrastructure using LiDAR technology.

Peter Sandberg, Founding Partner and MD at Nordic Secondary Fund, says, “We are excited to partner with Wingcopter as we share the team’s vision to drive meaningful change.”

“By enabling sustainable instant deliveries and the efficient inspection of critical infrastructure through aerial laser scanning, Wingcopter addresses two rapidly growing markets with the same multi-purpose platform.”

“Developing high-tech drone technology in Europe to tackle critical challenges for global customers not only demonstrates technical excellence but also makes an important contribution to a stronger and more sustainable European future.”

Drone solutions for logistics and LiDAR surveying

Wingcopter is a German drone technology company founded in 2017 by Tom Plümmer, Jonathan Hesselbarth, and Ansgar Kadura that develops, manufactures, sells and operates electric uncrewed aircraft systems for logistics and aerial data collection.

The company has grown into a European technology firm with a 150-person team focused on building certifiable drone technology for scalable operations worldwide.

Wingcopter’s main product, the Wingcopter 198, uses a patented tilt-rotor mechanism and proprietary software algorithms that enable vertical takeoff and landing like a multicopter while providing the efficiency and speed of a fixed-wing aircraft for distance flights, even in harsh weather conditions.

The company recently expanded its leadership team with Dr. Bernhard Klumpp as Co-CEO and Chief Product Officer, bringing automotive industry experience from Continental, and Tobias Jordan as Chief Financial Officer, who previously worked in technology investment banking at Credit Suisse and served as CFO at electric mobility startup Dance.

Dr. Klumpp becomes the third Managing Director of Wingcopter alongside Tom Plümmer (Co-CEO) and Jonathan Hesselbarth (CTO).

Wingcopter is supported by investors including Corecam Capital Partners, DRONE FUND, the European Investment Bank, ITOCHU, REWE Group, and others.

Capital utilisation

Tom Plümmer, co-founder and co-CEO at Wingcopter, says, “Europe needs technology champions more than ever. With the new financing and strengthening of our leadership team, we look to the future with confidence, firmly believing that we have the potential to become such a champion and bring this potential to full fruition together.”

“Both Bernhard and Tobias have invaluable knowledge and experience in scaling companies – Bernhard in the industrial environment, Tobias on the financial side. Having laid a solid foundation over the past few years, we will now literally rise to new heights from this launchpad.”
